What is the average salary to feel financially healthy?
To feel comfortable or financially secure, Americans need a salary of roughly $233,000 a year on average, Bankrate found. That's over three times the median U.S. household income of about $71,000 a year, according to Census Bureau data.
The median household income in the U.S. is just under $75,000, so it makes sense that the largest proportion of those surveyed (45%) said that it's possible to be financially stable by earning between $50,000 and $100,000 a year.
You Are Financially Healthy When …
You have enough savings to cover 3 to 6 months' worth of expenses. You can come up with $3000 to cover emergency expenses. This money could come from your savings, interest-free borrowing or the sale of assets. You feel confident that you are on track to retire when you plan to.
Here's what each generation, on average, said it needed to earn annually, as well as the net worth required, to achieve happiness: Gen Z: $128,000, with a net worth of $487,711. Millennials: $525,000, with a net worth of $1,699,571. Gen X: $130,000, with a net worth of $1,213,759.
An individual needs $96,500, on average, to live comfortably in a major U.S. city. That figure is even higher for families, who need to earn an average combined income of about $235,000 to support two adults and two children.
Psychologists have long agreed more money can equate to more happiness — to a certain extent. Since a notable study published in 2010 by Princeton University's Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton, many have agreed that after about $75,000 a year, your happiness somewhat plateaus, even if your income increases.
What do studies say about money and happiness? Purdue University found the ideal average income for people worldwide is $95,000 and $105,000 in the U.S. Beyond that, satisfaction with life deteriorates, it said.
By the numbers: 63% of Americans rate their current financial situation as being "good," including 19% of us who say it's "very good." Neither number is particularly low: They're both entirely in line with the average result the past 20 times Harris Poll has asked this question.
Being financially stable means you have enough money coming in to cover your expenses, as well as some extra funds to put aside for savings or potential crises. You continuously save money, you have paid your high-interest debts and you don't fret about emergencies because you're financially prepared.
At the end of 2022, 73 percent of adults were doing at least okay financially, meaning they reported either "doing okay" financially (39 percent) or "living comfortably" (34 percent).
Which generation has it the hardest financially?
Gen Zers are having a harder time making ends meet, let alone building wealth. Roughly 38% of Generation Z adults and millennials believe they face more difficulty feeling financially secure than their parents did at the same age, largely due to the economy, according to a recent Bankrate report.
San Francisco, California
To meet their basic needs, families need an income of $113,737, meaning the average income surpasses the required income by 110.94%.
The current median income, half earn more and half earn less, for a Gen Z worker nationwide is around $37,300 according to an analysis by GoBankingRates.
The upper middle class is often defined as the top 15% to 20% of earners. According to the Social Security Administration's 2022 wage data, the average upper-middle-class income was roughly between $80,000 and $100,000.
To find out more about how many people make over 100k per year, we've gathered essential facts and data. According to our extensive research: 18% of individual Americans make over $100k per year. 34.4% of US households make over $100k per year.
According to the latest figures by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the average salary in USA per month is $5,677 or $68,124 per year. As of 2023, the gross minimum salary in the USA is $32.75 per hour. Salaries range from $32,916 to $112,268 per year and include housing, transport, and other benefits.
Is $100K a good salary? In almost every case, yes. It's well above the poverty line as well as the American median income for both individuals and smaller families. Even in the face of rising inflation, a $100,000 annual income can typically afford a comfortable lifestyle and financial stability.
Only 12.3% of Americans make in the $75,000 to $99,999 range. An additional 16.4% make between $100,000 and $149,000. However, a large portion of Americans (16.2%) earn in the $50,000 to $74,999 range.
Earning more than $100,000 per year would put you well ahead of the median American household, which brings in $74,784 as of 2021. Assuming you're an individual without dependents, that salary would qualify you as upper class, according to three different definitions (Brookings, Urban Institute and Pew Research).
For Americans ages 25 to 34, the median salary is $1,003 per week or $52,156 per year.
Are people struggling financially 2024?
As living expenses in the U.S. continue to rise and wages struggle to keep up, it's unsurprising that Americans of all generations are having a hard time financially. For many, this means living paycheck to paycheck.
At the end of 2022, 73 percent of adults were doing at least okay financially, meaning they reported either “doing okay” financially (39 percent) or “living comfortably” (34 percent).
Early signs in 2024 are that consumers may be modestly pulling back on spending, but not to the point of hobbling economic growth. Solid consumer spending was key to surprisingly strong economic growth in 2023.
That said, the typical age of financial independence should be between 20-23 years old, according to a Bankrate survey.
