Gaseous and semi-volatile organic compounds emitted by the transport sector contribute to air pollution and have adverse effects on human health. To reduce harmful effects to the environment as well as to humans, renewable and sustainable bio-hybrid fuels are explored and investigated in the cluster of excellence “The Fuel Science Center” at RWTH Aachen University. However, data on the effects of bio-hybrid fuels on human health is scarce, leaving a data gap regarding their hazard potential. To help close this data gap, this study investigates potential toxic effects of a Ketone-Ester-Alcohol-Alkane (KEAA) fuel blend on A549 human lung cells. Experiments were performed using a commercially available air-liquid interface exposure system which was optimized beforehand. Then, cells were exposed at the air-liquid interface to 50–2000 ppm C3.7 of gaseous KEAA for 1 h. After a 24 h recovery period in the incubator, cells treated with 500 ppm C3.7 KEAA showed significant lower metabolic activity and cells treated with 50, 250, 500 and 1000 ppm C3.7 KEAA showed significant higher cytotoxicity compared to controls. Our data support the international occupational exposure limits of the single KEAA constituents. This finding applies only to the exposure scenario tested in this study and is difficult to extrapolate to the complex in vivo situation.

Hairdressers are exposed to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can pose health risks. Women of color (Black/Latina) represent nearly one-third of all U.S. hairdressers who may be disproportionally exposed to VOCs through occupational and personal use of hair products and treatments specifically formulated for this demographic. Still, data on workplace VOC exposures in this workforce remains sparse. We conducted area air monitoring of 14 VOCs in three salons serving Black women (“Black salons”), three Dominican salons predominantly serving Latino and Black women and 10 office spaces using active integrated sampling across 8-hour work shifts. Most VOCs measured were detected in hair salons (n = 13) and offices (n = 11). Salons had median VOC concentrations 2-175 times higher than offices. Among salons, 95th percentile VOC concentrations were up to 187 times higher in Black salons than in Dominican salons, suggesting that elevated exposures may occur partly from differences based on product use, services rendered, and salon characteristics (e.g., cleaning practices, ventilation). This is the first study to report indoor air concentrations of multiple individual targeted VOCs in U.S. hair salons serving women of color, highlighting the need for comprehensive exposure studies and assessment of potential health risks in this understudied and overexposed workforce.

This study examines green investment reforms carried out in Bangladesh. The reform process curated significant changes by promoting green investment and fostering the adoption of risk management (RM) rationalities. This study’s focus is on revealing changes in behaviour and explaining how RM can act as an effective generator of climate change mitigation practices.,Building on Foucault's concept of governmentality, the authors apply a “green governmentality” interpretive lens to analyse interviews and documentary evidence, adopting a qualitative case study approach. The authors explore how green governmentality generates RM rationalities and techniques to induce policies and practices within banks and financial institutions (FIs) for climate change mitigation purposes.,The findings provide valuable insights into the reform process and influence of RM rationalities in the context of environmental concerns. The authors find that the reforms and creation of RM rationalities affect the management of climate mitigation practices within banks and FIs and identify the processes through which the RM techniques are transformed as climate concerns are emphasised. The authors illustrate green governmentality as persuasive strategies, which have generated specific ways of seeing climate change reality and new ways of inserting RM into organisational activities, through the green governmentality effects they created. These reforms made climate change actionable and governable through the p...

Chemical composition, in vitro antioxidant and antibacterial activities of essential oil of Lippia sidoides (EOLS) and its major constituent was investigated. Chemical composition was analyzed in a gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC/MS). Antioxidant activity (AA) was obtained using 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. Antimicrobial activity was tested using disk-diffusion test against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and nine S. aureus strains resistant to beta-lactams, tetracycline and quinolone. EOLS chemical composition revealed the presence of 15 components identified as monoterpenes hydrocarbon (1.56%), oxygenated monoterpenes (94.31%) and sesquiterpenes hydrocarbon (4.11%), and the major components were thymol (79.70%). All OELS concentrations analyzed showed AA varying from 19.09 ± 2.088% (100 µg/mL) to 74.32 ± 1.61% (3.200 µg/mL). For thymol, the most efficient AA (70.11 ± 3.43%) was found with higher concentration (6.400 µg/mL). All S. aureus strains (n = 10) were sensitive to OELS and thymol. When OELS was used, the halo size of the ATCC strain was 74.4 mm and for the resistant-strains, it ranged from 29 to 60.4 mm. Thymol bioactive was lower when compared with OELS: the ATCC strain showed a halo of 24.5 mm and a variation of 17.5 to 45 mm was observed between the halo sizes in resistant strains. The results suggest that OELS as compared to thymol has better potential for use as an antim...
